Candle Lighters

Learn how to refill, operate, and care for your Zippo Candle Lighter.

Q: What type of fuel should I be using?

A: Use only a premium grade butane fuel to refill. Use of other than Zippo Butane may result in damage to the filling valve and could cause clogging.

Q: How do I refuel my Candle Lighter?

A: Hold the lighter with the butane refill valve up. Place the nozzle on the butane can into the filling valve and depress with firm, even pressure. Hold for several seconds. Repeat if necessary. Please ensure proper mating between the refill container and fuel reservoir of the lighter during refilling to avoid leakage of fuel. After filling your lighter, allow at least two minutes for the butane to stabilize before igniting.

Q: How do I operate my Candle Lighter?

A: To operate, adhere to the following steps:

  • Depress and hold the safety lock button.
  • Slide ignition switch forward to ignite and hold to maintain the flame.
  • Release the ignition switch to extinguish the flame and stop fuel flow.

Q: I filled my candle lighter, and it still won't light. What's up with that?

A: First, make sure you’re using Zippo or Ronson butane, as they are specially formulated for use in Zippo products.

If your lighter’s flame height can be adjusted, you can do so using the knob at the bottom of the lighter.

If your candle lighter is still not lighting as expected, try the following:

  • The torch may have a vapor lock. To release the "lock", all you need is a can of Zippo butane and a Phillips-head screwdriver or similar small blunt tool (be sure the tool does not have any sharp edges that could damage the fuel fill valve).
  • In a well-ventilated area away from any open flame, turn your candle lighter upside down. You should see the butane fill valve on the bottom.
  • Aim the valve away from your face and body. Align your butane can with the fill valve and firmly push down to fill it for approximately 5-6 seconds.
  • The fuel tank will now contain air and butane under pressure. Holding the lighter upside down, with the fuel fill valve still directed away from your face and body, use the screwdriver to press down on the fuel valve. Only use enough force to open the valve so the butane may release. Use caution, as the escaping butane is extremely flammable and will feel very cold. Do not attempt to light the candle lighter in the same area the butane was release.
  • Finally, fill the fuel tank again with butane by aligning the nozzle of the butane can with the fuel fill valve, firmly pressing down for 5-6 seconds. Allow at least two minutes for the candle lighter to stabilize and to allow any excess butane to dissipate.
